Hi everyone!
“The Manager or Team Leader plays the most significant role in driving employee engagement. The Manager accounts for 70% of the Variance in Team Engagement.”- Gallup.
One of Gallup’s biggest discoveries is that 70% of engagement is driven through the manager …
The Number 1 Manager Skill is Generating Collaborative Conversations.
So as leaders and managers building respectful workplace cultures, why does this matter in the context of psychological safety?
Here’s the thing …
Google’s well documented quest, “Project Aristotle” sought to understand what makes a most successful team … why some work groups thrive and others falter. What Google learned … Psychological Safety came out on top as the Number 1 prerequisite for building a successful team.
The surprising truth they discovered, is it doesn’t matter so much about WHO is on the team, but HOW the team interacts with each other.
The key question then becomes how are your managers interacting with their teams?
Is interpersonal trust and mutual respect being built where people listen to each other and show sensitivity to others’ feelings and needs or are they destroying it?
Where are your managers located on the Arc of RESPECT?
A Team Example:
- A manager located himself at Skeptic (Active Avoidance) on the Arc of RESPECT while all his team members located themselves at Experimentor (Willing Engagement).
- A massive wake-up call for the manager which transformed the relationship of their entire team, and their experience of each other throughout their Respectful Conversations Program!
An Organisation Wide Example:
- 90% of an organisation located themselves at Wait & See (Passive Tolerance) on the Arc of RESPECT.
- Wait & See is a non-committal state.
- Definitely not a climate of vibrant activity or cultivating a thriving culture of Mutual Respect with Collaborative and Co-creative conversations!
- We gently nudged the entire organisation to become Experimentors and Co-Creators through implementing their desired emotional culture with Respectful Conversations steeped in Brain Science.
- It created a profound shift!
The bottom line is …
“To get to the next level of greatness depends on the quality of the culture, which depends on the quality of the relationships, which depends on the quality of the conversations.
Everything happens through conversations!”
– Judith E. Glaser, Founder of Conversational Intelligence®
Collaborative Conversations between managers and their teams are the glue which cultivates and accelerates your thriving workplace culture!
